Q

Is Paper Raincoat coming to SXSW - even unofficially?

Alex Wong responded on 03/24/2011
A

well, you probably have guessed by now that we did not make it to sxsw this year. we were both involved in recording projects during that time...

Q

When you write a song, do you evaluate in your own mind, it's merits for screen time, movies, reality shows, etc? Do you try to cast it?

Alex Wong responded on 03/24/2011
A

sometimes i have an idea of a mood or feeling i would like a song/production to convey when it is listened to... which i think indirectly lends itself to certain uses in film/tv. but i have not explicitly gone after a certain placement when composing. thanks for writing!

Q

In blues I sense that the singer has been there, done that. How often do song writers like you utilize their own experiences to portray their musical subjects? Is the joy, heartbreak, wanderlust real

Alex Wong responded on 12/26/2010
A

i really don't think i could write anything worthwhile if i wasn't drawing from my own experiences, victories, and mistakes. even when i'm writing about a "fictional" character, i'm still drawing from some seed of experience that i can personally relate to to give the song resonance. otherwise the song isn't believable, and i think you can hear that flatness in the music, even if you can't put your finger on why.

Q

how do you write your songs? how is it different when you are writing alone vs. collaborating with someone else?

Alex Wong responded on 12/26/2010
A

hey there, thanks for writing... i really thrive on the cooperative aspect of cowriting when it's with the right person and you have the right energy together. i've been lucky to find several collaborators who i trust and respect enough to let down my guard with them and really write something that's meaningful to me. i like the excitement of chasing an idea with another person, and for me it often allows me to move through blocks quicker. when i'm alone sometimes i'll let my self-editor shut me down, and having another perspective to assure you that maybe your idea wasn't so crappy after all can be a really good thing. at the same time there are also songs that i need to write alone, because the act of writing becomes part of the process of understanding the emotional issue at hand, and working through it in your own way. sort of like a poor man's personal therapy session...

Q

Do you find that doing the percussion pieces on songs you have written difficult as you are so intimately tied to the melody and harmonies? Is this a dumb question?

Alex Wong responded on 12/02/2010
A

thanks for your question... and no it's not dumb at all! for me, i think of the rhythm parts on my songs as just as much a part of the songwriting as the melody and lyrics. i spend a lot of time finding the right part that really conveys the emotion of the song the way i want. so to answer yr question i guess i'm tied to all of the parts equally...

Q

Does the intensity of doing projects with other musicians lessen the energy and inspiration for doing your own music?

Alex Wong responded on 11/08/2010
A

hey,, thanks for writing... i would say sometimes it can, and it's really been about good scheduling habits so i can fully focus my energy on one thing for a block of time, then switch gears when it's complete. it gets difficult sometimes but the variety and working with different people are some of the things i love most about being in music. take care, a
